When we think about our daily interactions with the municipality, it usually comes down to the most basic, routine services: managing and paying our local bills. For most households, managing water, sewer, and property tax accounts is a recurring part of life. Yet right now, getting clear information, understanding your usage, or even accessing your accounts online can feel like an unnecessary chore.
A major source of frustration is the outdated way these bills are delivered and scheduled. Receiving bi-monthly, paper-mailed water and sewer bills is inconvenient and doesn't align with modern budgeting needs. Similarly, quarterly tax statements arrive without a monthly breakdown, making it much harder for families to plan and manage their household finances month to month.
Compounding these issues is the complete absence of simple, accessible online options to view water/sewer or tax accounts; when residents try to go digital, they must use Virtual City Hall, a terrible interface for accessing these essential records.
Navigating this clunky, disconnected, and outdated platform feels like stepping back in time, leaving users stuck trying to remember obscure account numbers or decipher confusing menu structures. When those online attempts inevitably fail, residents must call or visit municipal offices during strict, limited business hours to clear up simple billing questions. These routine tasks take far more effort than they should today.
Create a Better Customer Portal and Digital Services Access
For the many residents who are comfortable with and prefer digital tools, the current experience leaves a lot to be desired. We can do much better. We need a streamlined, single-portal system where residents can easily view water and sewer usage trends, manage payments, and find clear, straightforward answers all in one place.
Imagine a local government experience featuring:
- A unified portal that eliminates the maze of navigating multiple, confusing web pages.
- Clear, transparent usage data so you can spot leaks or track conservation efforts instantly.
- Reliable customer support channels that don't leave you jumping through hoops during narrow office windows.
Protecting Traditional Options
In Ward 2, my vision for municipal modernization is built on a simple principle: progress should expand accessibility, not eliminate it. This isn't about replacing traditional options or forcing anyone into a rigid, digital-only system. Traditional paper notices, physical mail, and in-person visits to municipal offices will always have a vital, respected place in our community for residents who prefer them or rely on them.
True modernization is about respect. It means ensuring that whatever your preferred method of communication is, whether it’s holding a paper bill in your hands or managing everything online from your kitchen table late at night, it works seamlessly and reliably.
Moving Forward Together
Updating our digital administrative tools isn't just about technology for technology's sake. It’s about reducing administrative friction, respecting residents' time, and making our local government genuinely responsive to every household in Strathroy-Caradoc.
